Most popular are souvenirs and jewelry made from anthracite coal. Each piece is one-of-a-kind because of the different sizes of coal that are used. Some of the many coal souvenirs displayed are paperweights, pen sets, bookends, clocks, animals, trains, eggs, angels and other religious items, mining related items, plus many others too numerous to mention. Many gifts can be special ordered and engraved. Also sold are hand crafted mining scenes such as coal breakers, shafts, tunnels and trucks which are made with intricate pieces of wood and coal. All are one-of-a-kind and authentic in detail. Another artisan features beautiful coal and gem trees along with miniature pewter animals, figurines and trains which are mounted on pieces of coal and agate. There are also many unusual pieces which feature mining scenes and trains which are mounted on "fools gold" and geodes. For the train buff, we offer a large selection of train-related items and souvenirs. Adults and children enjoy everything from railroad hats and whistles to trains in all shapes and sizes. Because of the thousands of school children who visit the tunnel on field trips every year and the many families who bring children, the staff of the Pioneer Tunnel strives to offer gifts which are not only unique and fun but also educational. One of the most popular items in the gift shop is "coal candy". This tasty candy is a local specialty, and people come from far and wide to buy it. It is a hard candy which comes in chunks and is black in color to resemble a lump of coal. It is flavored like licorice and comes boxed along with a miniature hammer for "cracking coal".
