Are reservations required for tours?
No. However, for groups of 10 or more, we do prefer you’d make an advance reservation for your group. Preferably, this reservation would be done at least one week in advance. You can call our office to make these large group reservations. For groups less than 10, advance reservations are not required. If you’d like, you can purchase your tickets through our website using the ‘BOOK NOW’ button, or you could show up and purchase your tickets in our gift shop, whichever you prefer.
Do you sell out?
No. Fortunately, we have enough staffing, that we do not sell out of tickets for our tours. If we have an influx of guests for a scheduled tour we will accommodate by running an additional tour. If you’re attempting to purchase tickets online and it says ‘BOOK NOW’ it does not mean that we have sold out, it simply means we are no longer selling tickets online for that posted tour time.
How do I purchase tickets?
You can purchase tickets online using the ‘Book Now’ button. This option is only available for advanced ticket purchasing. You can’t purchase tickets online for same day tours. But you can come to the Pioneer Tunnel and by your tickets upon arrival. Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the posted tour time to purchase tickets in person.
If I want to book a large group (25 or more) how far in advance should I call to make the reservation?
We suggest you call at least two weeks in advance to reserve the date and time. If this is not possible we will work with you to accept your reservation at any time.
If I’m running late, and I may miss my tour, can you hold the tour for me?
Unfortunately, no. Our tours run according to the schedule in fairness to the people who have been waiting for the tours to start. Additionally, delaying a tour impacts the tours later in the day as well.
Do you have parking for RVs & Campers?
Yes. Our parking lot is large enough to accommodate RVs and campers.
Are your tours handicap accessible?
Yes. We do suggest that you call in advance, in possible, to alert us that you are will be bringing someone who is handicapped. This prepares our tour guides to efficiently accommodate wheelchairs on the mine and train cars. However, our cars cannot accommodate motorized wheelchairs.
I am bringing someone who has difficulty walking. How much walking is involved on both the coal mine tour & steam train ride?
On the train ride, the cars stop and guests embark from the cars and stand a few feet away from the train to hear the guide talk. No other walking is involved. On the mine tour, guests get out of the cars and the tour guide shows them gangways, veins or coal, displays and exhibits.
I am claustrophobic. Do you think the coal mine tour will adversely affect me?
Part of the ride into the coal mine tour is somewhat like riding in the dark but there are lights overhead throughout the tunnel. As part of the tour the guides turns off the lights for a few seconds to show visitors what it was like for miners who worked in complete darkness with only their miner’s helmet lamp to shed some light on what they were working on. We suggest you use your own judgement about taking the tour based on the severity of your claustrophobia.
Is there an age limit or minimum for children to take the mine tour and train ride?
No, the train ride and coal mine tour are suitable for people of all ages!
Do you take credit cards?
Yes. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover and AMEX
Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes, you can purchase gift certificates online by clicking the ‘BOOK NOW’ button.
Is there a place to eat a picnic lunch?
Yes. We have a community park and playground area here on the Pioneer Tunnel grounds for you to enjoy your lunch, whether you purchase it here, or pack a picnic lunch.
If it is raining will the tours still run?
The coal mine tour is not affected by the weather. The steam train runs in the rain because, although the cars are open, they are covered. The only time there might be a delay for the train ride is if there is an electrical storm. That decision will be made by your tour guide at the time of the event.
